Ever since I was young my dream was to go to college. I wanted to do well in high school and go to a college close to home. Now that I am older, my dream has grown: I want to go to college but I also to be able to get a job that I love. This is why I am interested in the Graham Program. I don’t just want a degree, I want a network of people that I know and can contact for jobs, internships, or references. I want to meet the people of the industry that I am entering and get my name out there. The Graham Program is a great program where I can meet leaders of industries in the area and learn how to act in formal settings. Both my parents own and run their own business, and growing up I always helped them and saw what it takes to be a leader. Working to be a great leader for me started at a young age. In middle school I ran for student council and never left. Every year in student council we would have the Student Council District Conference, and every year I volunteered to go. I would take workshops on everything from team management to honing leadership skills. As I went into high school, I started to see that I liked to be a leader. I could see in it simple things, such as how I would take charge of a team project so that everyone’s things were organized and task got done when they need to, or taking control and organizing a night out with friends. Having leadership skills is a challenging strength, I always want to make sure that things are handled right and everyone is treated fairly. This can be nerve-racking in situations when I am not the leader. Working in my father’s company, Leatherman Contractor, has helped me to develop my leadership skills.
