Christmas stories are often used to teach lessons of giving and kindness. Many of said stories follow a theme or pattern. They can usually all be linked back to a universal message of kindness. In Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol, a story, and a lesson of holiday cheer is told. Set in the English 1800´s, a man by the name of Ebenezer Scrooge is the main character. He is greedy and hateful towards Christmas. His old dead friend, Jacob Marley visits him one night as a ghost, and warns Scrooge to change his ways. Ebenezer Scrooge lives alone and all the townspeople dislike and are afraid of him. He despises Christmas and is hateful towards those that celebrate it. The author describes Scrooge as ¨...A tight fisted, hand at the grindstone, Scrooge! a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner!” (Dickens 02). Scrooge's character is described in such a way that makes his character give off a displeasing, mean attitude. The character The Grinch, is shown in a much similar light. The Grinch lives alone in the mountains and isolates himself from those who enjoy Christmas. The Grinch is the town shut in, and all the Whoos fear him. Scrooge’s great dislike of Christmas leads to him never celebrating in the festivities. So when Scrooges nephew Fred comes to invite him to dinner, Scrooge gives his bold opinion of celebration; and coldly declines. “What reason have you to be dismal?’... ‘What else can I be… What’s Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money… every idiot who goes about with merry Christmas on his lips should be boiled in his own pudding!’” (Dickens 04). Scrooge was also a rude and mean person, who hated Christmas. He was a bad person but when he changed he did not change as much as the Grinch. Scrooge is a rich mean old man, who was given a chance to change, be his nephew inviting him to a Christmas party, or people going around asking for money to donate, but he never did any of that. While the Grinch didn't have an opportunity to change when everyone hated him, and even when he was invited to something, and started to change, they played sick jokes on him. Scrooge could have changed but he didn't, the Grinch only had one chance to change, and he took it.
Once upon a time, a Grinch had stolen christmas from the town of Whoville. The Grinch stole christmas to make the town suffer, but the Grinch found out maybe he misinterpreted Christmas. The Grinch thought Christmas just meant giving presents to each other and singing songs, so he decided to steal the presents and throw them into the abyss. At dawn the Grinch expects to hear the cries to Whoville, but The Grinch hear singing(Seuss). The Grinch figures out maybe Christmas does not mean just giving presents and feasting, maybe Christmas means spending time with family.

The protagonists, Scrooge and the Grinch, were memorable due to their dynamic nature and how they changed their perspectives. But the Grinch was notably more dynamic for several reasons. Although Scrooge was evil, this was due to his neglect and indifference to human suffering.
He can be selfish, rude, and cruel. Scrooge can get freaked out or scared if you try to make him scared. Back to Scrooge and his rudeness he has and smart mouth for this ghostly horror. There are many similarities between the book “A Christmas Carol” and its movie counterpart. For instance, both sow Scrooge as the misanthrope, the villain who eventually changes into a more generous man. Furthermore, the dialogue is almost identical. Nonetheless, these two works of art are not completely the same. In the book, Scrooge is constantly shouting, however, in the movie, Ebenezer is cold and quiet, but has an aura of menace around him.
Today I will be telling you the story of why the Grinch hates Christmas. The Grinch’s house as a child was very boring and plain. Even at Christmas it only had a bare tree with no lights or ornaments. They didn’t have any other ornaments inside or out. At Christmas, the Grinch and all of his siblings never got toys.

In the place of Ebenezer Scrooge’s outlook on life, he feels no joy. Ever since his lifelong business partner, Jacob Marley, kicked the bucket, Scrooge became more stingy than he ever was. A time of useless giving, robbery, is what Scrooge sees Christmas as.
We come to learn that Scrooge changes with his attitude. One quote from the text that accurately confirms this is…“No warmth could warm, no wintry weather could chill him. ”(page 3). This excerpt from the text explains how troubled and insecure he is inside, using a metaphorical perspective. We, as the readers, can draw inferences and conclusions on how loathsome he seems.
Scrooge in "The Christmas Carol" shows how much he hates Christmas, and everyone he works with to change to a happy person with the help of others. Scrooge emphasizes, "What a fine day fellow... An Intelligent boy, a remarkable boy. " This is a critical part of this novel because this shows Scrooge overcame his dislike of Christmas and his entire disliking of people.
