Things we can do to stop Mass Shootings Time and time again you look at the news and see a new mass shooting and instead of addressing the issue and trying to stop future ones from happening. We just have arguments about guns and how if everyone was armed it would have been different. While the news does nothing but talk about the shooter and very little about the victims of the shooting. When a person commits a mass shooting it should be taken an act of terrorism as this is literally an act that is not only bringing terror to the citizens by it effects. Ultimately hurting and killing those around that happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. No one loves terrorist attacks so making mass shootings a form of attack on the nation will make shooters think more before doing a horrific act like this. …show more content…
Even though the person did a horrible act, hurt, and killed many people and you want to make sure the world knows how insane the person is you don’t need to keep talking about him all hours of the day. What this does is get other people like that shooter to want to be talked about and then we have another mass shooting. Instead focus on all the victims and the family’s effected by this a lot more you can tell the people a little about the shooter but don’t make the shooter way more important than the victims. Infamous is still famous for these people an example of the news talking way to much of the killer is Adam Lanza the shooter of the elementary school in Connecticut, I know about him but don’t hardly know anything about the victims. A trick shooters have adapted in court is saying that they are mentally ill not saying that some of them aren’t, you would have to have something wrong with you to want to do something on this
Gun Control and Mass Shootings in America Gun violence is an unquestionable issue in America, with the United States ranking as one of the worst with both homicides and suicides using guns. That being said, we outnumber Mexico in gun related deaths and among first-world countries we rank far above others in the number of gun deaths, such as England and Australia. Consequently, we live in one of the only first world countries that does not have extensive gun laws and restrictions to gun access. Aside from the countless homicides and suicides by firearm in this country, one particular issue within this predicament is mass shootings, with the most recent mass shooting occurring on February 14th, 2018 at a high school in Parkland, Florida where 17 people were killed. Although, it may seem like an easy fix to just implement gun control laws into our society to eliminate gun violence, but it is important to note that Americans own nearly half of all firearms globally, which is roughly 325 million guns;
One day, one child, one gun, one school. Now, as saddening as it is to admit, we live in a world where school shootings are a part of everyday life, and there is nothing being done to stop them. As most can recognize, most of the media is more focus on what the President is going to say after the shootings happen, rather than focusing on what we as a nation are going to do to stop these tragic events. There have been a few ideas when it comes to solving this issue, and truthfully, most of these ideas will fall flat on their faces; meanwhile, arming teachers seems to be a possible solution. Arming teachers will deter shooters, secure students fears from outside threats, and in the worst case scenario can stop a school shooter before they can commit mass murder.
A simple way to stop school shootings in our district would be by eliminating all the factors that form a school shooter. Most school shooter suffered from bullying or had some sort of mental illness. In order to minimize the chance of a kid becoming a school shooter, we need to increase awareness.
The 26 Lives that Changed America On December 14th, 2012 the United States of America broadcasted the third deadliest massacre by one man alone of 26 lives. (Wikipedia) Bullets rang through the halls of Sandy Hook Elementary School that morning, murdering 20 children and 6 adults. Each child had a name, a family, and a future they never got to fulfil. During the aftermath of the Sandy Hook massacre, parents were terrified of the possibility their kid could be next.
Many people say that the real weapon used is rage. Guns are not bad things or good things. They are things, inanimate objects, chunks of metal with no will of their own (Medred 2). Why do we as a society not address mental illness more? The majority of all “school shooters” are misfits.
The shooter used a rifle called an AR-15, which many people think it means “assault rifle” but it really means Armalite Rifle design 15. Gun laws should be stricter on the mentally ill aspect. Nicolas Cruz, the Parkland shooter was mentally ill and bought a rifle legally which should not have been allowed to happen. Now making gun laws stricter will not mean the death rate or shootings will decrease right away because mainly the only people that go to a gun store to buy a gun are law abiding gun owners.
School shootings are starting to become a norm in today 's world. This is something we can only take precautions for but, we cannot completely stop school shootings from happening. Banning guns is not the option because the shooters are still going to find a way to get their guns. We should not punish everybody for the stupidity of some people 's actions. "At Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado two teens went on a shooting spree on April 20, 1999, killing 13 people and wounding more than 20 others before turning their guns on themselves and committing suicide" (Columbine Shooting, 2018).
The entire school shooting lasted for 45 minutes until the shooters commited suicide. The Columbine was one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history. The two shooters were students at Columbine High School. Columbine High School Shooting was a tragic event that could have been stopped even though the outcome of the shooting could have been much worse, the event that happened in the Columbine were horrific, and missed warning signs could have stopped the attack from ever happening.
Although many of these shootings occur every year, there many steps that can be placed in order to prevent them from occurring in the future. Creating gun laws that provide better background checks on the buyer and family can help lessen the chances of a mentally ill person from obtaining a gun. Spreading awareness of a person with a mental illness-or generally spreading information of the many different mental illness- can also help prevent mass murders such as Sandy Hook from occurring. Finally, researching ways to prevent mental illnesses from forming can help prevent these violent crimes. If the blame is on the illness, why not find ways to cease them from affecting more people?
Over the years, school safety has become more of an issue in the United States. Many have argued over the possible solutions for school safety. But through all the others, the only feasible solution is the use of metal detectors. Metal detectors have been known to increase safety when placed in an area that could be threatened. Metal detectors can protect schools from violence, especially from school shootings.
Stopping or reducing these mass shootings is often a complicated issue, it could be a
For example, the most recently alarming mass shooting occurred only a month ago in Parkland, Florida at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where a former student waltzed into one of the school buildings with an AR-15, pulled a fire alarm, and aimed his weapon at fleeing students, faculty, and staff, killing 17, and wounding 17 other victims, and has been broadcast across every platform almost nonstop. While this heartbreaking tragedy deserves all of the media attention it’s been receiving, there have been approximately 14 additional mass shootings, where 14 people have been killed, and almost 50 have been injured, with very little to no coverage in the news. Mainstream media absolutely shapes our perceptions of people and events, and by influencing public opinion, the media also directly influences our political atmosphere gun laws. Almost three
How to reduce gun violence " In the 1960's, there was one school shooting. In the 1980's, there were 27. In the 1990's, there were 58. In the past decade, there have been over 120" (Hoehn).
Most of the suspects of mass shootings are young males who usually commit the crime on their own with careful planning of the event. Most perpetrators have a fascination with weapons and the shootings usually occur in broad daylight in public places (Frances). There is an obvious difference in the brain of mass shooters to those of non-mass shooters. Low orbital cortex activity may be the main difference between the two groups of people. About 1 in 100 people are psychopaths, there was a study that was done at UC Irvine by James Fallon where he used a PET scan to measure brain activity.
Problem Solution Paper 95% of people think that america needs stricter gun control laws, yet the amount of shootings in the past years has risen exponentially. Gun violence is a serious problem and the people of the United States have wanted to solve this problem this for a long time. If people feel scared to go to school (which should be a safe learning environment for all children and all ages) that is a problem, and it needs to be solved, or at the very least put in barriers to deal with the mental disabilities and amount of guns associated with this problem. There has been an exponential rise in shootings in America since the 20th century. In the 20th century there were 226 shootings, in the first 18 years of the 21st century there have been 211 shootings.
