I believe the biggest misconception I had about school shooters is their feelings, or what I assumed is a lack of. What I have learned about the feelings of school shooters is that there is typically a guiding factor or initial issue that festers in someone. Said issue causes this person or group of people to act out. From what I have observed, these students typically have the brightest futures yet remain the most misunderstood of all students. Most of these students who carry out shootings killing themselves in the end, giving them a lifetime worth of attention they were clearly seeking without any repercussions for their actions. A close friend of mine, Ben was stabbed over twenty times by a student, Chad. Chad was headed to college with a promising future but decided it was more important to compromise everything he worked towards over a girl. Like I had said earlier in this assignment, there is often an initial problem that becomes the root of an act of school violence. Thankfully, this incident was not with a gun. While Ben was never in a life-threatening condition, he required several surgeries and it took a significant amount of time before he felt safe enough to return to school. I have seen how a tragedy like this can hurt the victim, friends and family and an entire school system. This act was created with a specific target in mind and there were several warning signs that the school and friends of the attacker should have picked up on. He had given clues such as telling people to stay home from school and asked what would happen if a specific wing of the school was shut down. On July 20, 2012, a terrible tragedy had taking place in aurora Colorado inside the century movie theater. This tragedy happened during the midnight screening of the film the dark knight rises which is based off the excerpts of the marvel character batman. A person walked into the theater, exploded tear gas grenades, and used guns to shoot into the audience killing twelve people and injuring 70 others. The person that did this horrible act was a man by the name of James Eagan Holmes, and he was arrested right outside of the century movie theater. Colorado has experienced this type of act before when going through the columbine high school shooting in 1999 but this was the deadliest act of violence since then.
This analysis concludes that after a school shooting, students no longer feel safe at school and suffer more acutely due to personal connections with the victims. The book “Rampage The Social Roots Of School Shootings” written by Newman et al, offers many different views and theories behind the issues of Rampage school shootings. In this paper I will give the reader an in depth overview and evaluation of the aforementioned book. Offering researched based reasons to why these school shootings actually happen. They explore the communities of Heath and Westside, the grounds of two horrific acts of rampage shootings by Michael Carnell, Andrew Golden and Mitchell Johnson. They explain various angles of there research such as identifying an issue, how signals given by children can be misinterpreted, the effects of social capital and how mental factors play a role in the acts of the shooters.
A simple way to stop school shootings in our district would be by eliminating all the factors that form a school shooter. Most school shooter suffered from bullying or had some sort of mental illness. In order to minimize the chance of a kid becoming a school shooter, we need to increase awareness.
The damages and loss that the boys caused to families, friends, and the community of Littleton Community. Many people were injured, and almost all of them wanted to seek legal help. In total, 13 innocent people lost their lives, and “Close to three dozen families of Columbine victims settle suits with the parents of the suspects and gun suppliers.” (Belknap) Before the boys killing spree, they “made home videos before the attack making references to what they were going to do and apologizing to their parents for it.” (Fleming)
Many of the suspects have depression, anxiety, and could have a history of trauma. Knowing that their mental health is one of the reasons brings attention to mental health awareness and how big of a problem it is and needs more attention to it. One big cause of school shootings are bullies, as a young kid getting picked on and starts to get mad will turn to a weapon thinking they could threaten the bully or sadly make them go away. Anyone could help with bullying by just sticking up for the kid or going to get help to stop the bullying before it goes too far. Another cause of school shootings is very sad.

Symbolic interactionism illuminates fundamental elements that attribute to school shootings. According to Jeanne Ballantine and Joan Spade in their book, Schools and Society, A Sociological Approach to Education, “Symbols are the concepts or ideas that we use to frame our interactions” (2015:19). Symbolically, a sense of self and hierarchical place is determined by social interactions (Ballantine and Spade 2015). Students find themselves determining how they see and feel about themselves by how their cohorts, parents, siblings, teachers, and others interact with them. Sadly, the young perpetrators of school shootings have derived their sense of self from their social experiences of isolation, bullied harassment, and low hierarchical status, producing skewed and biased self-perceptions.

Social Control theory can be used as a reliable and valid psychosocial explanation of school violence, specifically in explaining the actions of the Columbine school shooters. Kempf-Leonard and Morris described control theory in their journal in a way that provides an explanation for how behavior conforms to that which is generally expected in society. Some control theories emphasize the developmental processes during childhood by which internal constraints develop. This shows that school shootings have become more prevalent over the years. Violent people who feel depressed, attacked, or alone, may become school shooters. While some feel these may be the causes, others think that accessibility to guns is the number one factor in these attacks.

When seconds count the police are only minutes away or, in the case of my high school, they are only an hour away. When a school shooting or stabbing happens you want your children to be standing directly behind the police officer; but, what if that’s not possible? What if a blizzard happens and the police have trouble finding your school?
