When seconds count the police are only minutes away or, in the case of my high school, they are only an hour away. When a school shooting or stabbing happens you want your children to be standing directly behind the police officer; but, what if that’s not possible? What if a blizzard happens and the police have trouble finding your school? If a police officer is not present when a school shooting happens, you want your children to be near the next best thing, an armed teacher who knows how to, and can, protect them. Truth be told, there is very few ways to prevent an attack on a school. Merriam Webster defines the word Prevent as “to stop something from happening or existing.” This means that the police have to know beforehand if an attack on a school is to be prevented and arrest the attacker before the attack happens. For clarification, the reason I am using the term “an attack” instead of “a shooting” is that an attack can happen at the school that does not involve a gun. School attacks that have not been prevented can only be reacted to. With reaction being defined by Merriam Webster as “to behave or change in a particular way when something happens, is said, etc.” If the police cannot be there to react to an attack that leaves only the school staff, including teachers. The main controversies involving arming teachers are that: 1.) Children will find the guns and think that they are toys and will thus play with them. 2.) Children will know where the guns are, so when
There are different steps for school safety now because Columbine High School and the police were a big factor in “dropping the ball” when it came to the Columbine shooting. So many people missed a lot of signs, especially the police station. Brookes Brown and his family warned the police about Eric Harris for more than a year before Columbine, when the Brown family was threatened by Eric multiple times. It is revealed that the Browns family “had contacted the sheriff’s department about Eric fifteen times”(165). Although they contacted them fifteen times the police station never took their concerns seriously, yet if they had taken their concerns seriously there is a possibility that Columbine would have never happened.
A.) The social problem that the article “When Schooling Meets Policing” is focusing on is the negative issues police officers have on students and their education when police officers are in the school. B.) The big problem that is emphasized in the article is what police officers are doing to young children when the children misbehave. One issue that is emphasized in the article is when at water balloon fight at a high school went down as a senior prank, eight students were arrested and two dozen police officers came to the campus. Students are being arrested for spit balls, temper tantrums, and other childish things that kids are expected to do at that age. In the past the education system would discipline the students with detention or something similar, but now the police officers are actually arresting students for very small things.
A simple way to stop school shootings in our district would be by eliminating all the factors that form a school shooter. Most school shooter suffered from bullying or had some sort of mental illness. In order to minimize the chance of a kid becoming a school shooter, we need to increase awareness.
In the past and present, school safety is one of the number one priorities of any school district. Having a safe and secure learning environment is crucial in getting children of any age the education that they need and deserve. When this security is threatened it can be either directly, for the victims of school shootings, or indirectly, for the students that hear about these incidents and no longer feel as safe when they are in their school. When a tragic event happens like what recently happened in Florida, there will be an argument and as with any argument, there will be many sides. Some ideas for school safety that have come out of this incident include, gun control laws, mental health screenings, and things that can be done in schools to control the situation of having an active shooter.
Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation.
Violent criminals know that currently schools are gun free zones, and can use this factor to their advantage. Rather than falling victim to an attack on the school; teachers could protect themselves and their students. Students could feel much safer if their teacher was armed. Students would feel more safe if they knew they could be protected from an attack from an intruder or another student. Criminals know that teachers currently are not armed and could potentially see schools as a target.
This should not be a worry for the child or parents but it has to be because at this point any school is a threat. So a possible factor in decreasing shootings is arming teachers, by doing this teachers can fight back instead of shielding or running from the shooter. Reason #2 teachers can defend their students by changing this law and using correct training teachers should be able to carry a weapon. By doing this not only insure safety it will give relief for parents all over the country. This tactic will give school staffs a chance to outnumber a possible shooter.
Your child could be caught up in the next school shooting, and be killed. If only your school cared enough for their students and had a security guard, they would have been able to prevent the whole thing. Schools today still need more security, but how much security they have today, and what more security can and will prevent. Schools need more security today, we can reduce how many people die to school shootings each
Over the past few weeks, arming teachers has been a controversial topic throughout the country. School shootings have taken the lives of many over the past few years, yet they are becoming more and more frequent. In today’s society children shouldn’t have to go to school worried if they are going to be safe that day. If teachers are armed it will add that extra bit of protection to the children. A big question is if arming teachers is even going to matter if an active shooter happens to be in that school.
Many schools in today’s society suffer from shootings at some point while children are attending school. Shootings in schools are not a new occurrence, and America has dealt with multiple shootings in public schools in which the lives of many children and teachers have been undeservingly taken (Elliott 528). Because of school shootings, this leaves our children in danger with no way to protect themselves. Gun violence in schools is an evident problem, and there are several ways to reduce the number of incidents, such as mental health screening for owners of guns, interconnectedness of communities, and more school funding.
We negate the resolution that teachers should be armed due to the waste of money, time, and safety. We would like to present the following definitions: Armed is defined by merriam-webster to be furnished with weapons Weapon is defined by merriam-webster to be something used to injure, defeat, or destroy. We believe this resolution is asking us to advocate to negate and our opponents to advocate to affirm.
A nonprofit group that attempts to prevent gun violence called “Everytown for Gun Safety,” released a statement about school shootings. The organization claimed that the school shooting at “[Marjory Stoneman Douglas High] is the 18th school shooting in the U.S. in 2018.’” (Cox and Rich). In less than three months, there have been eighteen school shootings. This shows that schools are no longer a safe environment.
Resolutions are vehemently being sought to protect schools from possible attacks and to objectively eradicate deadly school shootings altogether. Commonly, security officers are placed in schools in hopes that increased surveillance will inhibit violent outbreaks (Crawford and Burns 2016). Mixed evaluations have been found in association with security officers, while some benefits reportedly transpire, experiences of disparaging consequences remain a regrettable reality as well (Crawford and Burns 2016). Additionally, active shooter drills routinely occur at schools across the nation, however, as Jillian Peterson and James Densley report in their CNN article titled, “The Usual Approach to School Security Isn’t Working,” studies indicate that
The Vicious Cycle School Shootings Create As school shootings are on the rise, so are students’ fear all across the nation. “According to Everytown for Gun Safety, there have been at least 149 school shootings since 2013, 52 this year alone” (Board). This shows that school shootings have become more prevalent over the years. Violent people who feel depressed, attacked, or alone, may become school shooters. While some feel these may be the causes, others think that accessibility to guns is the number one factor in these attacks.
Hypothetically, a law is passed stating that teachers are allowed to carry guns in school. In a sick twisted world, the teacher becomes the school shooter. Your student is in class and their teacher pulls out their government funded school weapon and starts shooting. How is your child supposed to protect themselves if the approved district teacher starts shooting the students with a malicious intent. Teachers should not be allowed to carry guns at school.
