In the past and present, school safety is one of the number one priorities of any school district. Having a safe and secure learning environment is crucial in getting children of any age the education that they need and deserve. When this security is threatened it can be either directly, for the victims of school shootings, or indirectly, for the students that hear about these incidents and no longer feel as safe when they are in their school. When a tragic event happens like what recently happened in Florida, there will be an argument and as with any argument, there will be many sides. Some ideas for school safety that have come out of this incident include, gun control laws, mental health screenings, and things that can be done in schools to control the situation of having an active shooter. One method of deterring an active shooter was stated as arming select teachers within schools in order to effectively end the situation and protect the students. …show more content…
This idea, while having some kinks to work out has good intentions and would save numerous young livers in this kind of situation. The teachers carrying firearms would be trained and they would need to receive training often to keep their gun. They would also have their firearm locked somewhere in the classroom, the guns would remain locked up until a situation arose that made it necessary. With these features, this idea would be a way to dissolve a situation quickly and save the lives of the children in a school. Hunter Pollack, a brother of one of the Florida victims stated that if there had been “’a teacher who could go through discreet training to carry a firearm around his waist, it could’ve been a very different situation”(CNN
I foresee both, advantages and disadvantages, about arming school staff members. I believe that this could be part of a solution for some smaller and rural school that cannot afford armed security or have limited access to law enforcement. I also believe that something is better than nothing because the sooner we can stop this event, the less citizens that are harmed. Law enforcement has focused heavily on advance training and preparing for these attacks since the Columbine incident in 1999. Over the past 19 years law enforcement continues to evaluate the tactics and mindset of the active shooters.
No school is genuinely safe if I gun, concealed or open, is present on campus. Many pro-gun believers promote the vitality of arms on school grounds, arguing that if a shooter came into a classroom, a civilian could fight them off with a personal firearm. In reality, there have been zero mass shootings stopped by armed civilians in the past thirty years (Gilson 2013). Theoretically, if a masked gunman were to stampede into a classroom, a teacher or student would heroically whip out a hand held pistol, shoot off the attacker, and save the day. In practice, successful combat interventions are extremely rare: in the only documented attempts of citizen intervention of mass shootings, “those civilians not only failed to stop the shooter but also
A simple way to stop school shootings in our district would be by eliminating all the factors that form a school shooter. Most school shooter suffered from bullying or had some sort of mental illness. In order to minimize the chance of a kid becoming a school shooter, we need to increase awareness.
One reason that arming a teacher isn't a sound choice is that majority of teachers aren't trained in shooting a gun. Not all teachers are even responsible enough to carry a weapon, especially in a high-stress situation. The real responsibilities of teachers are to help students become knowable and critical thinkers. So to demand a teacher to protect with guns goes against what a teachers morals, job, and life expertise follow. Despite people knowing what the role of teachers is, some are still pushing to equip guns even though knowing the two don’t blend, especially in a school location.
Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation.
Teachers could feel more comfortable in their classrooms if they knew they could protect themselves and their students from violent threats. Schools being a gun free zone are a target for violent
This should not be a worry for the child or parents but it has to be because at this point any school is a threat. So a possible factor in decreasing shootings is arming teachers, by doing this teachers can fight back instead of shielding or running from the shooter. Reason #2 teachers can defend their students by changing this law and using correct training teachers should be able to carry a weapon. By doing this not only insure safety it will give relief for parents all over the country. This tactic will give school staffs a chance to outnumber a possible shooter.
Over the past few weeks, arming teachers has been a controversial topic throughout the country. School shootings have taken the lives of many over the past few years, yet they are becoming more and more frequent. In today’s society children shouldn’t have to go to school worried if they are going to be safe that day. If teachers are armed it will add that extra bit of protection to the children. A big question is if arming teachers is even going to matter if an active shooter happens to be in that school.
Many schools in today’s society suffer from shootings at some point while children are attending school. Shootings in schools are not a new occurrence, and America has dealt with multiple shootings in public schools in which the lives of many children and teachers have been undeservingly taken (Elliott 528). Because of school shootings, this leaves our children in danger with no way to protect themselves. Gun violence in schools is an evident problem, and there are several ways to reduce the number of incidents, such as mental health screening for owners of guns, interconnectedness of communities, and more school funding.
Resolutions are vehemently being sought to protect schools from possible attacks and to objectively eradicate deadly school shootings altogether. Commonly, security officers are placed in schools in hopes that increased surveillance will inhibit violent outbreaks (Crawford and Burns 2016). Mixed evaluations have been found in association with security officers, while some benefits reportedly transpire, experiences of disparaging consequences remain a regrettable reality as well (Crawford and Burns 2016). Additionally, active shooter drills routinely occur at schools across the nation, however, as Jillian Peterson and James Densley report in their CNN article titled, “The Usual Approach to School Security Isn’t Working,” studies indicate that
The Vicious Cycle School Shootings Create As school shootings are on the rise, so are students’ fear all across the nation. “According to Everytown for Gun Safety, there have been at least 149 school shootings since 2013, 52 this year alone” (Board). This shows that school shootings have become more prevalent over the years. Violent people who feel depressed, attacked, or alone, may become school shooters. While some feel these may be the causes, others think that accessibility to guns is the number one factor in these attacks.
Equipping teachers with guns, who are little more than civilians, is absurd. This would not help prevent the type of deadly mass shooting we 've been seeing lately. All that would do is increase the possibility of innocent people getting caught in the crossfire. Instead of training for how to use guns teachers should be taught self defense and how to use items around them as weapons. It would also help if every teacher learned self defense and not just a
With reaction being defined by Merriam Webster as “to behave or change in a particular way when something happens, is said, etc.” If the police cannot be there to react to an attack that leaves only the school staff, including teachers. The main controversies involving arming teachers are that: 1.) Children will find the guns and think that they are toys and will thus play with them.
You must have heard all about the tragic school shooting that occurred in Parkland, Florida by now. This atrocity was caused by an ex-student who killed 17 people and injured many more. It is painful to say but, unless something changes it will happen again. The school officials need to go back and rethink the emergency plans they have and design new ones tailored to prevent and minimize effects of these incidents. The plans and drills in place are old and clearly not built to work in these “active shooter” situations.
A huge priority of school is that students should be kept safe, and that happens from staff being allowed to search students. In 2013 a Company called “Everytown” did some research about gunfire in schools. During this research, they found out that from 2013 to 2015 there were about 200 firearm related incidents in the USA. These incidents included fatal and nonfatal assaults, suicides, and unintentional shootings. 53 percent of these attacks happened at K-12 schools and 47 percent happened at college and universities.
