In this day and age, gun control is a major debate. Many believe that guns should be banned due to gun violence, but is that absolutely necessary? However statistics and historic documents like the Second Amendment, show evidence against gun control advocates, proving that guns should not be banned in America due to gun violence. Laws supporting gun control take away the American people's rights and freedoms. By the right of the Second Amendment, which states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”, we have the ability to own guns. In addition to this, guns also help control criminals and bring a means of self-defense to countless Americans. When surveyed, 48% of felons professed that they avoid potential victims if they knew they possessed a gun. The National Rifle Association (NRA) vouches that guns are used 2.5 million times a year for self defense. In a survey by Pew Foundation report, 79% of male gun owners and 80% of female gun owners felt safer when they owned a gun. Executive Vice President of the NRA, Wayne LaPierre says, “ We cannot make ourselves safer by making ourselves less free.” Gun control laws do not prevent gun violence or crime.
