Shrek : Resilience SA The movie ‘Shrek’ released in 2001, is a great tale of love, and friendship. Shrek an ogre, leaves the comfort of his swamp to gain a deed to his land, on the way, he finds his partner, and friend for life. Throughout the film, Shrek develops resilience, despite it being a prior characteristic. Shrek shows resilience when he accepts his mistakes and apologises to Fiona, whilst he is doing this, he tells her how he really feels. Like Shrek, I developed resilience when I decided my behaviour was unacceptable and improved my attitude toward life, and learning. Throughout the film, Shrek develops resilience over numerous occasions, one short example is when he protests Lord Farquaad’s commands. Shrek over the course of the film showed great stubbornness; when he misheard a conversation between Fiona and Donkey, this gives him an improper impression. Shrek later realises his mistake, and to the surprise of many, he apologised to Fiona. Shrek showed great strength, and resilience by doing this, as he usually would not. Doing right by others is hard, and takes a lot of strength, and in making this decision, Shrek showed resilience. Another example of Shrek developing resilience is shown relatively close to the beginning of the film, this …show more content…
This act was particularly hard for me, as by now my behaviour had been fluctuating for a good amount of years and I got it in my head that this behaviour was normal, after I was kicked back into line after multiple suspensions, and a meeting with my parents, I strived for the best in my behaviour and education. In this act I showed resilience, as I kicked out a bad habit that had been causing me trouble for far too long. Sometimes you have to look at yourself and your faults, and decided how you can be a better person, this is incredibly difficult for most, and shows vast amounts of
During the musical, Shrek talks about how his life resembles an onion with many layers beyond his harsh exterior. Donkey furthers this metaphor by telling Shrek that he is hiding behind his scary and ugly face just because he is afraid to let people into his heart. He is afraid to show emotion and feelings to Fiona because he is hiding behind his onion layers. Donkey explained that Shrek’s layers were more like a parfait because each layer is beautiful and worth exploring. Shrek had always put up his layers acted as if he were an onion, stinky and unwanted.
Shrek is a bad-tempered, green, and ugly ogre who lives happily in his own swamp. Until the day that the great Lord farquaad banished all sorts of fairy tale creatures to invade and live in his swamp. When Shrek wants his peaceful home back to himself, he and his sidekick, Donkey, make their way to the castle to speak to Lord farquaad about getting his swamp back. Lord Farquaad refuses to remove the creatures unless Shrek and Donkey do him a favor. The favor is that they rescue Princess Fiona from a castle guarded by a dragon and bring her back to the Lord.
Being resilient in tough situations can be substantial in some cases. To be resilient means one has great wit, especially in a 'finding a way out ' scenario. It can even be the key to survival, as can be shown in a short excerpt from Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand. It gives a great example of resilience based off of a situation that Louie Zamperini finds himself and crew in as their plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean. What characteristic is most important in helping Louie survive?
This week and next week’s writing assignment will be split into two parts based on Eleanor Clarke Slagle’s lecture which examines the lives of those who have endured extraordinary hardships and their ability to rise above. Slagle’s case study poses the question: Who rises above adversity? Most of the data use in her study comes from personal experiences of those who have been faced with terminal illness, abuse, impoverishment, and incarceration. First I would like to provide a brief background on one of the earliest pioneers of occupational therapy. Eleanor Clarke Slagle was a social worker that directed occupational therapy research for the state of Illinois and organized a therapy program for the state’s mental hospitals.
The Glass Castle Essay Wesley Murray A3 8/28/16 In Jeannette Walls’s book The Glass Castle, there are many examples of what is called human resilience. No better quote describes human resilience better than, “No matter how much falls on us, we keep plowing ahead.
Some of the characters, like Dodge, Alyss, and Hatter, show perseverance in trying to defeat Redd. Dodge perseveres through the mental pain of The Cat killing his father and the physical pain of The Cat 's scratches. Hatter shows perseverance when he helps Alyss escape the palace safely and risks his life trying to find her. Alyss shows perseverance in trying to defeat Redd and finding the courage to stand up to her. This theme shows the reader that no matter what gets in your way, you can always fight through and
The determination to live comes from human nature. But the urge of giving up when we come across a difficult problem is also a part of human nature. There a few people in this world that have the characteristics of resilience. As author Kendra Cherry describes them, "People that are able to keep their cool have what psychologists call resilience, or an ability to cope with problems and setbacks" (Source A; Cherry, 1). An example of someone who has the characteristics of resilience is a bombardier name Louis (Louie) Zamperini.
The movie Shrek shows exaggeration through the characters of Shrek and Fiona. Shrek exemplifies exaggeration by pulling a large amount of earwax out of his ear to create a candle. The amount of earwax pulled from Shrek’s ear is abnormal to the amount of wax from a regular human. Shrek also takes a frog and turns it into a balloon for Fiona, and Fiona also picks up a snake and turns it into a balloon. Another example of exaggeration is when Fiona begins to sing with a bird and tries to sing louder than it.
The Roman poet, Horace once said, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant”. Horace argues that difficult circumstances critically impact the development of one’s character. Although some may argue that character will reveal itself regardless if adversity is present, I agree with Horace’s perspective, adversity determines one's potential capabilities, strengthens personal values, and provides a feeling of self-worth. Sure, there are cases in which prosperous circumstances lead to internal development.

What does resilience really mean to you? The literal definition to resilience is the ability to cope with problems and setbacks. In this story it shows how certain situations affect people in different ways and how each person goes through seven skills. The characteristic that Louie undergoes is the skill of Strong Problem-Solving.

How these two character faces their fate, can be considered heroic. Accepting fate is very hard and cannot be done without a strong heart. Is perseverance is an essential human quality? In life, we are faced with endless misfortune and difficult decisions. A person can think of how they do in each difficult situation they face the same way a character in a movie goes through the character arc. An example of this is when your mom tells you she can't afford to send you to your favorite summer camp this year. You have two options, Accept that your family can't afford it or raise the money needed by getting a job.
Hardy, Concato & Gill (2004) stated that resilient people are those who display “the capacity to remain well, recover, or even thrive in face of adversity”. Masten (2001) as mentioned that they are the ordinary person dealing with the challenges and tragedies of everyday real life. For instance, the response of many Americans to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and individuals’ efforts to rebuild their lives shows their resiliency. Being resilient does not mean that a person does not have or had experience difficulty or distress; the emotional pain and sadness are common but the path to resilience is likely to involve considerable emotional distress. Resilience is not a trait which people either has or do not have whereas it involves
