After 4 years of war, called the Civil War, between the North and South, the South finally surrendered and all African-Americans were now American citizens and were able to be among the whites. After the Civil War, they turned into a stage of Reconstruction. Reconstruction is the act of building something back up again to its original form, or even better than before. The reconstruction in our society after the Civil War was really important because it helped rebuild the torn down places in the South, it helped support and heal African Americans, and it helped shape new mindsets of the Inhabitants in the United States of America. This is why the reconstruction in our society after the Civil War was important. In our Social Studies book on page 443, it talks about an Union general, WIlliam Tecumesh Sherman. He led 100,000 Union troops to Georgia and they raided many cities in that state all the way down to its knees. With severe damage, America's plan of reconstruction brought Georgia and many other states that experienced what Georgia experienced back on their feet. The reconstruction plan offered them supplies and brought back the original buildings, even new ones.
