“Bah! Humbug!” That was Scrooge 's favorite saying. We read a play called, “A Christmas Carol.” We also listened to the audio version of “A Christmas Carol.” I believe the play version is better than the audio version. My first reasoning for this is, I can visualize the characters in my mind. I say this because in the text it says, “Scrooge is at his desk, at work…Bah! Humbug!” It also says, “Cratchit rubs his hands together, puts on a white comforter and tries to heat his hands around his candle.” I can see Bob Cratchit in my mind trying to keep warm. My second reasoning is, I hear the voices the way I want to hear them. In the play it says, “Nephew: Come, then. What right have you to be dismal. What reason have you to be morose? You 're rich …show more content…
My third reasoning is, I can imagine the different things they do and I can feel the pain and happiness they go through. In the text it says, “The clerk in the tank applauds, looks at the furious Scrooge and pokes out his tiny fire…” When I read this, I see a man with an angry face at Scrooge holding a candle with a tiny fire. I saw what was happening and I felt that urge of frustration he had. I believe the audio version of “A Christmas Carol” is better because I can hear background music and I can hear the noise of thunder and the boom of the lightning. The thing is you can’t visualize as well, and you don’t hear the voices the way you want to hear them. Also, the background music wasn’t helpful either. It distracted me as the person read. In conclusion, I believe the play is better than the audio. My three reasonings were, I can visualize, hear the voices, and see the reactions that are happening. At the end, I decide, “ok, the audio version was good, but not great!” [Church bells chime in Christmas Day. A small boy, named Adam, is seen now DOWNSTAGE RIGHT, a light fades up on him.] “Hey you boy! What’s today? What day of the year is it?” Scrooge says this to Adam. He replies, “Today sir? Why it’s Christmas
In doing this he thought Christmas would not come and all of the Whos would be upset. This, however, is disproved by the singing in Christmas spirit that the Whos performed. Perplexing the Grinch, “he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore… “Maybe Christmas… doesn’t come from a store… perhaps… (Christmas) means a little bit more!””(39). This revelation alters the Grinch’s perception of Christmas vastly. By allowing himself to make an effort to understand Christmas he embraced the Who culture.
He was visited by his old friend Marley that had died 7 years back. Marley was there to warn him about the 3 spirits that would be visiting him at certain times. But after the third spirit visited him he finally learned how lucky he is to be alive. So, Instead of saying, “Bah, Humbug” he actually wishes people a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. These are just some of the way that Scrooge has changed his cruel ways into better
Scrooge lives in a town filled with merry people, but he is just the opposite. Not to the reader’s surprise,“Nobody ever stopped him in the streets to say with gladstone looks, ‘My dear scrooge, how are you? When will you come to see me?”’ (3). Ebeneezer Scrooge is known throughout his town as the kind of person you stay away from.
The second comparison between the book and the movie was Who’s love for Christmas. This is very important because the it is the Who’s love for Christmas that causes the Grinch's hate for
"When I pay a days wages for no work". Scrooge said this while talking about christmas to the clerk who asked if he could have christmas day off, to which Scrooge said no. Scrooge 's attitude to the poor is based on the common stereotype; poor people are always begging for money, which isn 't always true but Scrooge believed it. In the Victorian era, many Victorians had the same attitudes as Scrooge to the poor, they both disliked them as they always "begged for money" or made a show of their un-wealthy-ness and it made others feel sympathetic enough to donate them money and Scrooge disliked this.
Another difference is that in the Christmas Carol movie they sang while in the book they never sang. Another difference is that Scrooge said he will double
When the Ghost of Christmas Past visits him, he is worried and very confused. Ebenezer Scrooge thinks that the entire thing is a joke. “There’s more gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are.” His actions illustrate how simple his life was, by catching him completely off guard, and showing that all of his joy is gone. He becomes terribly frightened by reliving his past.
In the text, Scrooge is visited by two portly gentlemen who ask Scrooge to donate to the poor because they are
Scrooge in "The Christmas Carol" shows how much he hates Christmas, and everyone he works with to change to a happy person with the help of others. Scrooge emphasizes, "What a fine day fellow... An Intelligent boy, a remarkable boy. " This is a critical part of this novel because this shows Scrooge overcame his dislike of Christmas and his entire disliking of people. Instead of rudely gesturing to people, he is now starting to act nicer, and more mature.
Scrooge walked over to the window and looking only slightly confused called out “What’s to-day!” What sounded like a young boy responded with “To-day!” “Why, CHRISTMAS DAY.” I heard Scrooge muttering to himself.
The old owner of the counting-house grabbed a ruler and went to the front door. “...Scrooge’s keyhole to regale him with a Christmas Carol: but at the first sound of ‘God bless you, merry gentleman! May nothing you dismay!’ Scrooge seized the ruler with such energy of action, that the singer fled in terror…”
One night, in a dream, he is warned by his deceased friend, Marley, that three spirits would come to him. The first spirit is the spirit of Christmas past, and it shows him an event from his past. In the event, Scrooge is seen leaving his lover because she is too poor. Scrooge regrets this decision greatly. The next spirit tells him about the present, and it shows him how his employee, Bob Cratchit, is suffering.
Through the rest of the story, Scrooge is visited by his old business partner Jacob Marley that warns him of three spirits that would visit him that later that night. In the first scene Scrooge’s nephew comes in and tells him “merry
In the beginning of the story, Scrooge was a lonely greedy man. He also hated Christmas and didn’t like other people. One quote that shows that Scrooge was greedy is, “What
The descriptive short sentence of the setting being during “A winter day,” again emphasizes the normalcy of the situation, as well as hinting that the setting of the story takes place around Christmas time. The
