Teachers Carrying Guns By:Mark Roessner So far there have been shootings across the US in schools. To address the problem, President Trump has come out with a few ideas and suggestions that will hopefully preserve children safety at schools. Those ideas are not without their critics, pros and cons. Trump listened to a couple victims and parents of victims tell their mournful story and came out with a suggestion.“I want certain highly adept people, people who understand weaponry, guns” to have a permit to carry concealed firearms in schools.” Is what Mr.Trump says. I feel like this is the correct way to address this menace of school shootings, teachers will be prepared if the worst happens. So far other groups have given responses to this statement. “Students in Texas …show more content…
Trump and some school students. In the fight, I hope for everyone to find what side to pick, if any, but as a student, I urge you to allow proper protection in our schools even guns need be. One day, one child, one gun, one school. Now, as saddening as it is to admit, we live in a world where school shootings are a part of everyday life, and there is nothing being done to stop them. As most can recognize, most of the media is more focus on what the President is going to say after the shootings happen, rather than focusing on what we as a nation are going to do to stop these tragic events. There have been a few ideas when it comes to solving this issue, and truthfully, most of these ideas will fall flat on their faces; meanwhile, arming teachers seems to be a possible solution. Arming teachers will deter shooters, secure students fears from outside threats, and in the worst case scenario can stop a school shooter before they can commit mass murder.
As stated by Robert Birnbaum “guns on campus is a wicked problem that can never be satisfactorily resolved.” (Birnbaum 11) I don’t see a solution for this problem anytime soon because people are trying to solve this issues with stricter policies and more laws but this will has not worked so far so it is time to try something new, allowing students to conceal carry is that something new. How many more lives and school shootings is it going to take to convince the public that although there is some risk in allowing guns into our schools we would benefit more than we
Teachers with guns could possibly cause an increase in the amount of violence that happens in their classrooms. The fact of violence in their classrooms, for example, "what happens when a triggerhappy teacher what happens when a teacher wrongly identifies a threat and shoots an innocent person?” (" Even in a teacher 's hand, guns don 't belong in school" ). Human are humans. We can make mistakes, a teacher has a gun in their classroom, is more probable that students could be injured.
Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation.
Teachers could feel more comfortable in their classrooms if they knew they could protect themselves and their students from violent threats. Schools being a gun free zone are a target for violent
How can one focus on learning when they are brimming with fear that their school could be the next site of a shooting? It is difficult to see a brighter future when it seems the American government can only provide empty promises to ban even “bump stocks”, an accessory commonly used to make deadly weapons even more lethal. “We cannot merely take actions that make us feel like we are making a difference. We must actually make a difference” (Johnson). Though some may argue that firearms are necessary to defend ourselves and that it is our given right to own them.
This should not be a worry for the child or parents but it has to be because at this point any school is a threat. So a possible factor in decreasing shootings is arming teachers, by doing this teachers can fight back instead of shielding or running from the shooter. Reason #2 teachers can defend their students by changing this law and using correct training teachers should be able to carry a weapon. By doing this not only insure safety it will give relief for parents all over the country. This tactic will give school staffs a chance to outnumber a possible shooter.
Over the past few weeks, arming teachers has been a controversial topic throughout the country. School shootings have taken the lives of many over the past few years, yet they are becoming more and more frequent. In today’s society children shouldn’t have to go to school worried if they are going to be safe that day. If teachers are armed it will add that extra bit of protection to the children. A big question is if arming teachers is even going to matter if an active shooter happens to be in that school.
This question will go through every parent, teacher or other kid of staff mind every single day, wondering who will attack next. Moreover, what best if we are well armed to protect others, and ourselves but the reality is that not even with weapons our lives are secure, weapons will not stop school shootings. The problem starts with the person having issues with themselves and their surroundings and we need to make sure to have more support towards students with problems or that they mind feel left out somehow. Instead of fighting and worrying about making new rules for teachers to carry guns, they should really focus on their
Many schools in today’s society suffer from shootings at some point while children are attending school. Shootings in schools are not a new occurrence, and America has dealt with multiple shootings in public schools in which the lives of many children and teachers have been undeservingly taken (Elliott 528). Because of school shootings, this leaves our children in danger with no way to protect themselves. Gun violence in schools is an evident problem, and there are several ways to reduce the number of incidents, such as mental health screening for owners of guns, interconnectedness of communities, and more school funding.
Unlike professional shooters, teachers must undergo a series of training in order to obtain a gun. Without the proper protection and training, which was not included in the resolution, would guarantee that the weapons would fall under the wrong hands of the students. Everytown Research states, “Among shootings at K-12 schools in which the age of the shooter was known, 56 percent (39 of 70) were perpetrated by minors.” The resolution states that all teachers would be armed, but, if the teachers were to be armed, the teachers would traumatize the students mentally away from them. Hamby, a research professor in the department of education states, “ ...the links between exposure to weapons violence and negative outcomes of trauma in kids (including depression, anxiety and aggression).
Since 2012 there have been around 170 school shootings around the US. December 14 was the massacre of 20 children ranging from the age of 7-8. Many of the teachers on campus did not have a weapon with them and

Hypothetically, a law is passed stating that teachers are allowed to carry guns in school. In a sick twisted world, the teacher becomes the school shooter. Your student is in class and their teacher pulls out their government funded school weapon and starts shooting. How is your child supposed to protect themselves if the approved district teacher starts shooting the students with a malicious intent. Teachers should not be allowed to carry guns at school.
Guns have no role in our country schools. Schools and colleges are places of education. Students should be free to learn in an environment away from every day violence. The catastrophes that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Columbine High School, and Virginia Tech. confirm the penetrating conclusion guns have in our nation’s schools. Violence on campus has Students, Parent, and University Staff all concerned and looking for preventative measures.
