Gun have been long supported the notion that it is for self defense. Use of gun has been altered over time, many questions what these uses of guns mean to our nation. Debates on gun control and pro-gun control prevalent to self-defense. In the reading entitled Gun Control Isn’t the Answer by James Wilson, he emphasizes that if gun become control in United States of America, the U.S will likely see an increase of violence. Adam Winkler writing The Second Amendment All for Gun Control by Adam Winkler discusses potential support of having gun control by the second amendment. Through factors of gun control and anti-gun control, it is obvious gun violence continues to occur in our nation affecting innocent and vulnerbale lives. …show more content…
Wilson believes that if guns becomes control in our nation, United States may see an increase of violence. In addition, illegal use of gun will become an consequences due to gun controll. Wilson states ‘“In the decade since England banned all private possession of handguns, the BBC reported that the number of gun crimes has gone up sharply” (Wilson, 2007). In other words, Wilson believes that gun control is not a solution for Europe nor United States, but to stand by the already existed law of guns. I …show more content…
United States of America may see a decrease on gun violence, mass shootings, and proper enforcement use of guns. In addition, I believe that it will be able to control citizen’s limitation of owned guns and usage. For instance, relatives of some of the 26 victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, one of deadliest mass shooting at a school took part of a march in New York to bring awareness of gun control (Frizell, 2014). I believe that if the perpetrator of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was not able to obtain gun from his own home, a property of his mother. The 26 victims relatives would not be suffering as of today, and may not be apart of the march. I believe that if gun control can be implemented our nation can decrease gun violence. Wilson had asked for his readers to not be overlooked by the mass shooting case such as Virginia Tech and understand that United States can be under the way of increasing gun violence if gun control rules. I believe that Wilson lack the thought that the mass shooting at Virginia Tech caused 32 deaths by one individual. These were 32 innocent people who potentially were not associated to the perpetrator. For this reason, I disagree with Wilson argument and do not believe that by allowing the practices of gun will decrease gun
Since 1966, there have been 150 mass shootings in the United States. Over 1,000 people have been killed, and over 150 of those people were children or teenagers. These statistics are brought up in a heartbreaking article by The Washington Post, titled “The Terrible Numbers that Grow with Each Mass Shooting,” written by By Bonnie Berkowitz, Denise Lu and Chris Alcantara. After the most recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida, debates on gun control have once again sparked up. This has happened far too many times for change not to occur.
Some days crime rates are up and then the next they are down, what we do know is that America is becoming safer. In 2005, 11,346 persons were killed by firearm violence 477,040 persons were victims of a crime committed with a firearm, (National Institute of Justice). Surprisingly, a lot of gun violence in America is related to self defense. Between 1987 and 1990 it was found that guns were used in defense during a crime incident 64,615 times annually. This equates to two times out of 1,000 incidents (0.2%) that occurred in this time frame.
Nyah Acoff Period 5 Ms. Langiotti 5/16/18 There is a major debate in the United States concerning the issues of gun violence and gun control. I believe the only way to lower the rates for gun violence is through gun control. In the last year alone, there have been a number of mass shootings using small powerful
The author achieved to tell us about how gun violence can be lowered, and he explains if gun control would help less school shooting to happen. The intended audience would be the people who think gun control should take action or think gun violence should be stopped. The text was published on U.S News. The text was published
Although the second amendment states all americans have the right to bear arms crime statistics show that we need tighter gun control to lessen the widespread shootings. Gun violence has existed in america
Recently, a miserable mass-shooting incident in Las Vegas has caused 58 deaths and approximately 500 injuries which was the fatalist gun-related incident in history of the United States (CBS NEWS, 2017). Besides, the number of gun violence incidents has increased from 51,882 in 2014 to 58,784 in 2016 (Gun Violence Archive, 2017). The stunning incident and the upsurge in gun violence in the recent years provoke much public debate about whether guns should be ban completely in the United States. Waldman (2017), a senior writer of The American Prospect Magazine and a blogger of The Washington Post, suggested only allowing a small group of people who have special need to own their private gun like in other Asian countries in order to stop heavy casualties caused by guns every year. Maltz Bovy (2015), the author of ‘’The Perils of Privilege’’, agreed to ban guns completely with a view to forbid guns from entering the realm of possibility.
Solutions can be made to help the problems with death by guns in the United States, this in term may fix the problems with the second amendment. One solution that may help the situation of the second amendment is the accessibility to certain guns .Many mass shootings include military-style weapons ,such as assault rifles, which are more powerful than normal guns and prove to be highly lethal. In an article by Infobase Learning called "Assault Weapons: Should the government restrict access to assault weapons?" done in 2016 it talks about what happened in the Sandy Hook Elementary mass shooting it states, “...20-year-old Adam Lanza shot and killed 26 people, including 20 children aged 6 and 7, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, before killing himself. Earlier in the day, Lanza had killed his mother, a gun enthusiast, and taken several of her assault weapons, which he used in his rampage.”
Gun violence can’t be be controlled in the United States. “If public opinion doesn’t demand change in congress, it will not change” (Obama, 2014). Even if the public demands change it doesn’t mean change will happen. “74% of Americans say the right to own a gun is essential to their freedom’ (McCarthy, 2017). The public should have a say on whether or not they want more gun control.
Gun Control Debate Jake Novak, in an article for CNBC titled, “Gun control isn’t the answer. We already know how to stop the violence,” gives his opinion regarding the controversial issue of gun control. Novak argues that gun control is not the answer to rising gun violence but that proper enforcement of the law would go a long way in reducing the cases of gun violence in America. He states, “We actually solved the issue of rising gun violence in America in the mid-1990’s and again in the early 2000’s by doing something radical. We enforced the law” (Novak 28).
Gun control is a hot topic in America. Yet, we rarely hear of discussion on this issue. Throughout these articles, both authors have a good example of why gun-control should be the answer or not. The first article, Gun control isn’t the answer, the author argues, regardless, of strict gun laws in America people will still have access to guns. He states that getting rid of guns wouldn’t prevent criminals from buying illegal weapons.
Many anti-gun groups say since 1970 the number of firearms has increased, but forget to say that no murder rates have increased, the proportion of people who did have guns are dropped from 49 percent to 40 percent, but violent crimes rise and fall, so, the number of gun owners has no influence on whether crimes rise or fall. Another report says that every 43 deaths provoked by a gun is more likely to kill a relative than a criminal, but they tend to forget that 86 percent (37 deaths) of 43 deaths, were suicides. The ¨Gun War¨ has been going on for years, everyone has a different view of how weapons should be treated and dealt with. But since the beginning of this country, we have the right to keep and bare arms. There will always be people who try to get rid of guns, and there will always be people who defend guns.
Moorhouse, John C, and Brent Wanner. “Does Gun Control Reduce Crime Or Does Crime Increase Gun Control?” Ebscohost, 1 Jan. 2006, web.a.ebscohost.com/ehost/pdfviewer/ pdfviewer?vid=1&sid=db378b8b-d9e7-4ee7-b26c-460bc1177bd4%40sessionmgr4008. Moorhouse and Wanner, in their article “Does Gun Control Reduce Crime Or Does Crime Increase Gun Control”, studied whether or not gun control reduced gun violence in individual states. The overarching theme throughout the individual states is that gun control doesn’t reduce gun violence and is very ineffective.
Some people might say that we need a gun to protect ourselves in the United States, but there are actually various ways to protect ourselves instead of using a gun according to the article, “How Americans Protect Themselves from Crime.” Transition to Conclusion: before the government legislates about the gun control law, we need to be the spearhead that is awake to this problem deeply and carefully. Restate Thesis: I am convinced that the entire civilian should not own guns to prevent the gun violence, and only government officers must be able to own guns. Review Main Points: we realize that erroneous gun possession contributes to horrible gun accidents.
Instead of banning or limiting guns, the evidence will show that removing the current restrictions and targeting individuals instead of guns will be a more effective process. The topic of gun control has two polarized opinions. One such opinion targets the individuals responsible for the crime, instead of just the weapons. John Moorhouse and Brent Wanner tackle the issue of gun control in their article “Does Gun Control Reduce Crime Or Does Crime Increase Gun Control”, which was published in 2006 in the twenty-sixth volume of the Cato Journal. These researchers looked at the effects gun control laws had on violent crime and gun violence in the individual states.
The number of incidents of gun violence last year in the United States was about 60,000. In recent years, the number of mass shooting has risen to about one mass shooting per day in the United States. The country is divided with some wanting to reevaluate our gun control laws and either ban or add additional regulations to the purchase of guns. Others say it is our right for Americans to own guns and something the founding fathers considered important to put in the Bill of Rights. The number of firearm sales has risen with the number of mass shooting many Americans question if banning guns or certain guns could help decrease the number of gun violence deaths.
